LEED – the ‘Green Building’ Standard of the Future

LEED stands for ‘Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’. LEED is designed to optimize owner/occupant well-being, environmental performance and economic returns of newly built or renovated buildings.  The guidelines apply to existing construction practices, standards and technologies, while introducing new and innovative concepts and criteria.  The LEED rating system has 5 performance categories where credits can be achieved: Sustainable Site; Water Efficiency; Energy and Atmosphere; Materials and Resources; and Indoor Environmental Quality.  A separate category, Innovation and Design Process, encourages exceptional environmental innovation and/or performance above that demanded of the basic standard. Search “LEED” on the web if you want to know more.
